Drug Testing

Drug Testing

For on-site testing, the employer is provided with the specimen collection kit and negative test results are determined within minutes. All non-negative express drug screens are sent to certified laboratories for confirmation screening.

We offer two options for urine drug testing. The results of an express drug test are instant. It is also important to note that the results of an express test are qualitative: the level of drug in the body is not determined.

Express/Point of Collection (POCT)
A specimen collection kit is used for the express/POCT drug testing, there are different collection kits depending on the type of testing required. Negative test results are determined within minutes of obtaining the sample. Each sample is screened for donor tampering and all non-negative express drug screens are sent to certified laboratories for confirmation screening.

Hines Health Services offers multiple options for express or POCT drug testing to be able to meet your company needs. Currently, we offer the following options:
– 7 panel
– 7 panel + OXY
– 10 panel
– 12 panel

Lab-based urine drug testing is offered in the following ways:

  • As a stand-alone test
  • And in addition to a urine express test (urine express and lab) to confirm a non-negative urine express test

The donor’s sample is collected and sent to a certified lab facility for testing. This allows the levels of drugs in the sample to be determined, as well as rule out any false positive results from medications. Lab-based testing samples are securely packaged and sent directly to the lab with no result given at the time of testing.

Results from samples sent to the lab can take anywhere from 5 to 7 business days, depending on whether they are confirmed positive or negative, and how quickly the Medical Review Officer (MRO) is able to contact the donor.

Oral fluid drug testing measures drug levels in a donor’s saliva. This form of testing continues to grow in popularity and acceptance because it detects recent drug use. When compared to urine and hair drug tests, oral fluid is best at detecting recent drug use. Drugs take time to metabolize and pass through the system in a urine test

An oral fluid drug test detects drug use in the past 12-24 hours (dependent on the drug) and does not test for historical usage.

If an oral fluid drug test comes back positive from the lab, employers are armed with a strong indicator that the donor recently ingested the drug and was impaired on the job.
Oral Fluid Limitations

Oral fluid testing requires a small sample that is collected under direct supervision. Because collections are observed, oral fluid testing is considered a tamper-resistant screening method in that it’s difficult for a donor to cheat or adulterate their sample.

Hair follicle drug testing requires a small sample of hair that is collected under direct supervision of an MRO without any invasion of privacy. During collection, the collector cuts approximately 100-120 strands of hair from the crown of the donor’s head. The sample of hair is cut as close to the scalp as possible, so only the strands of hair above the scalp are tested and not the actual hair follicle.

Benefits of Hair Follicle Testing:

  • Longer Window of Detection
  • Convenient, Tamper-Resistant Collections
  • Fast, Reliable Results

It is a simple and quick process that typically requires a donor to provide a hair sample of 1.5” (3.8 cm).
Head Hair

3.8 cm (1.5”) = Approximately a 90 day window of detection

1.0 cm (0.5”) = Approximately a 30 day window of detection

Hair testing is nearly impossible to adulterate and identifies whether drugs have been used in the last 3 to 12 months. Head hair can be broken down into 30 day segments.

Results

Negative lab samples take 5-7 business days.
Confirmed positive lab samples take 7-10 business days.\

Hair Drug Tests Cannot Be Masked

Special shampoos, bleaches, and external contaminants are ineffective in altering hair drug testing results.

Computer generated selection lists of your employees will be provided for random testing and follow up testing schedules.

Oral fluid testing may be permitted for incident and near miss (post incident), observation of employee conduct (reasonable cause), and random testing.

Oral fluid testing is not permitted for site access or any testing that is included in conditions established pursuant to 5.2.2(b) or 5.4.2. (Canadian Model 2005)
